Aparna Popat(1996), Saina Nehwal (2006) and Siril Verma (2015) are the other silver medallists from India with Saina bagging the only world junior crown for the country in 2008.
Knowing well that Sankar can play marathon matches, Kuo clearly had an aggressive strategy going into the final. Sankar faced a tough challenge from Kuo Kuam Lin right from the start of the match. The Taiwanese raced to a 3-1 lead at the start and maintained his lead from then on by playing some good aggressive shots. Sankar managed to reduce the deficit to 5-4 but Lin didn’t let the Indian to make a comeback as he bagged the next four points on the trot.
He then entered the interval with a 11-8 lead, enjoying a three-point cushion. After the break Lin led his lead slip away by making consecutive errors and that allowed Sankar to claw his way back into the contest and level the scores 13-13. But Lin soon came back into the contest as he won the next six points on the trot and closed out the first game 21-14.
Lin started the second game too on an aggressive fashion as he took 4-0 lead. Sankar clawed his way back to level the scores 6-6 but once again Lin didn’t allow his opponent to take the lead as he snatched the next three points and went on to lead the first game 11-9. The Taipei shuttler soon dominated as he raced to a 20-14 lead. But Sankar fought back brilliantly and gave a scare to the Taiwanese as he levelled the scores 20-20. But Kuo managed to clinch the next two points with his big smashes and won the title.
Earlier, Sankar Muthusamy became only the second boys singles player from India to reach the BWF World Junior Championships final when he defeated Thailand’s Panitchapon Teeraratsakul in straight games in semifinal.
