Canelo vs Charlo: Who Has ‘Iron Man’ Jermell Charlo Lost To?
Canelo vs Charlo: A look at Jermell Charlo’s controversial defeat
Charlo enters the ring this weekend with an impressive 35-1-1 record. Out of these 35 wins, 19 have come by knockout, giving him a 54% knockout rate. However, with all his success and titles, he has had two blemishes along the way.
Charlo’s first, and only defeat came in 2018 against Tony Harrison. The two competed for Charlo’s WBC title, and the ‘Iron Man’ entered the ring undefeated. And while Harrison hurt Charlo on multiple occasions, Charlo eased his way and dominated Harrison.
However, the judges did not see it the same way. Harrison took home a unanimous decision with 115-113, 115-113, and 116-112 scorecards. However, this defeat raised many eyebrows as experts and fans alike voiced their opposition regarding the decision.
Despite this, Charlo took on Harrison again in 2019. This time, the ‘Iron Man’ did not leave it to the judges. He made sure to break down Harrison and knock him out. In the process, he reclaimed his title and made a statement to the division. To this day, the defeat to Harrison remains his only loss.
However, some may argue Charlo should have two defeats to his name. This is because, in 2021, Charlo took on Brian Castano in an undisputed super-welterweight title bout. And Charlo struggled to get a foothold in the contest as Castano outboxed the American.
Unfortunately for the Argentinian, he did not do enough in the judges’ eyes. Ultimately, after 12 rounds, the judges ruled it a split-decision draw. Many fans and experts opine that Charlo lost this fight. Regardless, the ‘Iron Man’ ended that debate with a comprehensive knockout win in the rematch.
So there you have it. This is the story behind Jermell Charlo’s sole defeat. What do you make of it? Do you think Tony Harrison did enough?
