Parveen Hooda stripped of Asian Games bronze, India’s medal count down to 106

Parveen Hooda is an ex-World Championships bronze medalist as well, and was a bright hope for Paris 2024 Olympics medal.

India’s record medals tally of 107 at the Asian Games 2023, has not come down by one after boxer Parveen Hooda was stripped of her bronze medal in the women’s 57kg category. The move has come after she was suspended for 22 months after whereabouts failure for a period of more than a year. That is not the only repercussion of the ban. India has lost the Paris 2024 Olympics quota as well, and will have to again fight for it in the last qualification tournament.

Parveen Hooda’s Ban

As per ITA, Parveen’s ban/suspension will only end on July 16, 2025. “In addition to the period of ineligibility, the athlete’s results obtained between December 11, 2022 until May 17, 2024 are disqualified,” the ITA said in a statement. As per the IBA’s anti-doping rules, three whereabout failures in 12 months, result in a ban.

Firstly, despite being stripped of the medal, India continue to remain on the fourth position in the Asian Games medals tally. Secondly, India will now field Jasimine Lamboria in the same category in the last Olympic qualifier, starting in Bangkok on Friday. After excluding Parveen’s Paris 2024 quota, now India has only three boxing quotas left — Lovlina Borgohain (75kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg) and Nikhat Zareen (50kg).
