In a video released by Romanian authorities, the online influencer and self-described misogynist Andrew Tate is shown being detained on suspicion of human trafficking, rape, and organizing a criminal organization. In Bucharest, he was detained alongside his brother and two other suspects from Romania. Since April, there has been a criminal inquiry into the Tate brothers.
After his arrest, local media reported that only after determining the Tate’s were a group via “social media” did prosecutors call for law enforcement to mobilize. This sparked online rumors and ensuing news stories that Tate’s presence in Romania had been verified by authorities thanks to the brand of pizza seen in a video that he shared to his Twitter account.

This is all part of the ongoing BBC presenter scandal, and distinguished presenter Huw Edwards’ name has been trending on all social media platforms for all the wrong reasons.

Since the news broke on social media, there has been a tonne of active speculation online. The ex-kickboxer, Andrew Tate also jumped into the scene, as he tweeted on the post that said, “ Well well well, how the tables have turned. On Sunday, July 9, a purported Snapchat video of a man allegedly flashing his buttocks leaked online, causing internet users to speculate that the unnamed BBC broadcaster at the centre of the story may be him.
However, considering the incendiary nature of social media speculation, it should be highlighted that there is a strong likelihood that the image going around has been altered to resemble Huw Edwards. This seems to be pretty indicative of today’s alarming reality in the age of deepfakes.
