Why Gopichand could not become General Secretary? – It was revealed that Gopichand wanted to contest for the post of General Secretary. However, as per the Badminton Association of India’s constitution guidelines, a member can contest for the post of General Secretary only if he/she has been a member of the executive council.

Since Gopichand is not an executive council member, it prevented him from filing nomination for the post of General Secretary and in the last minute, he decided to contest for Vice-President. He is now expected to be elected as one among the 12 vice presidents of the BAI.

Meanwhile, BAI President Himanta Biswa Sharma, who is also the Chief Minister of Assam is set to be re-elected as the president of the national body unanimously. The elections, if necessary for all the posts will be conducted on March 25.

Before filing his nomination for a post in the national body, Gopichand resigned from his post as the chief coach of the national team, ending his 15-year tenure. Ever since taking over as the coach in 2006, Gopichand has been instrumental in giving a fillip to Badminton in the country. Under him, Saina Nehwal, Kidambi Srikkanth and PV Sindhu thrived by winning World Championship and Olympic Medals and also becoming World No.1. BAI will now have to look for a new chief coach who will have to carry forward the legacy that Gopichand has created.
