Avani Lekhara eyes Paris 2024 Glory: Confidence soars ahead of Paralympics

Avani Lekhara’s journey from Tokyo to Paris is a story of resilience, confidence, and the pursuit of excellence. As she takes aim once again, the nation watches with hope and pride.

As the Paris Paralympics 2024 draw closer, all eyes are on shooter Avani Lekhara, who made history three years ago at the Tokyo Paralympics. Avani, who was the first Indian woman to win two medals at a single Paralympics, is now gearing up with renewed confidence for the upcoming games in Paris.

Rising star in Indian shooting

Avani Lekhara burst onto the global stage at the Tokyo Paralympics, where she secured a gold in the 10m air rifle event and a bronze in the 50m rifle three-position event in the SH1 category.

This category is designed for athletes with lower limb impairments, who can shoot either standing or sitting. Now, as she prepares for Paris, Avani’s self-assurance has grown, bolstered by her previous success and the recognition she has received.

Avani Lekhra inspired by Manu Bhaker success

Avani Lekhra has expressed her admiration for fellow shooter Manu Bhaker, who recently won two bronze medals at the Paris Olympics 2024. Reflecting on their achievements, Avani said, “First of all, I feel proud that we are both shooters. When I won two medals in Tokyo, it was a new awakening for women in sports in India… a barrier was broken. Manu did the same, and going forward, I wish more such barriers are broken.”

Support from TOPS

Avani Lekhra credits much of her growth and preparation to the support she has received from the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). “TOPS has always been very supportive in terms of training, equipment, coaching, and exposure. They are always a call away,” she shared. This backing has been crucial in her journey, helping her sharpen her skills and stay focused on her goals.

From Shy Girl to Confident Athlete

The transformation Avani has undergone since Tokyo is not just physical but mental and emotional as well. “It’s not about money or fame, the greatest takeaway in the post-Tokyo phase has been how my self-confidence has improved. From a shy introvert girl due to a disability to what I am today is a lot of change has happened for sure,” Avani explained.

Her growth in confidence is evident in her communication and her approach to challenges, both on and off the shooting range.

Balancing shooting with law aspirations

Beyond her shooting career, Avani Lekhra has dreams of becoming a judge. She recently completed her graduation with a BA LLB and plans to pursue a Master’s degree before diving into the competitive examinations required to enter the legal profession. However, for now, her focus remains firmly on the Paralympics, where she hopes to bring more glory to India and further elevate para sports.

India’s Largest-Ever Paralympic Contingent

Avani will be part of India’s largest-ever contingent of 84 athletes heading to the Paris Paralympics. The team will compete in 12 sports, including archery, athletics, badminton, and shooting. As Avani prepares to compete in three shooting events, she remains determined to push the boundaries of what is possible for para athletes in India. “It’s much better now, but we still need more awareness and visibility,” she says, reflecting on the growing recognition of para sports in the country.

Avani Lekhara’s journey from Tokyo to Paris is a story of resilience, confidence, and the pursuit of excellence. As she takes aim once again, the nation watches with hope and pride.
