Along with American partner Rajeev Ram, she beat wild card entrant Ellen Perez and Matwe Middleklopp in the second round of the Grand Slam event on Sunday. The opponents produced a stiff challenge in the opening round, leading to a tie-breaker. The match finished 7-6(8), 6-4 in a game that lasted an hour & 27 minutes. The wild-card duo who had defeated the third-seeds Robert Farah-Nicole Melichar in the previous round started the match at a good pace against Mirza and Ram. But Indo-American pair gained the upper hand after taking the first set in a critical tie-breaker.
With momentum on their side, Mirza and Ram upped their ante and cruised to a straight-set win after they broke their opponents early in second.
The unseeded Sania Mirza – Rajeev Ram, both former Grand Slam champions, won the first-round match 6-3, 7-6(3).
Both Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna were ousted from the women’s and men’s doubles, respectively, in the opening round.

Sania is the last remaining Indian in the main draw of the Australian Open and this will also be her last appearance in the Grand Slam event as she is set to retire at the end of the year. The six-time Grand Slam winner, made the decision after her first-round exit in the Women’s doubles event where she partnered with Nadiia Kichenok.
Saina is looking forward to have a great swansong in the Australian Open when she plays along with Rajeev Ram. The pair made an impressive start in the first round by defeating Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic and Nikola Cacic in straigh sets.

During the match, Saina showed signs of her vintage form by bringing out fiery forehand winners. She will look to continue her impressive form in the second round as well. Meanwhile, their opponents Ellen Perez and Matwe Middleklopp defeated Robert Farah and Nicole Melichar-Martinez 6-4, 6-4 in the first round. The Indo-American pair is much more experienced than their opponents and enter the match as favourites to move into the next round.
