Tommy Paul outclassed Ben Shelton 7-6(6), 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in an all-American clash at the Australian Open on Wednesday to reach his maiden Grand Slam semi-final and become the first man from his country to do so at Melbourne Park since Andy Roddick in 2009.

Paul claimed the tight first set in a tiebreak with a fierce forehand that prompted his opponent to crash a return into the net and the 25-year-old went up 4-2 in the next as Shelton’s booming serve finally cracked.

The inexperienced Shelton appeared to run out of ideas and sprayed errors on Rod Laver Arena before Paul sealed the second set with his
fourth ace of the contest but the world number 35 surrendered the next despite being up a break at 4-3.

Paul recovered from the dip in his level without a fuss and put 20-year-old Shelton’s serve under pressure early in the next and held firm to set up a last-four encounter with nine-times champion Novak Djokovic or fifth seed Andrey Rublev

Novak Djokovic vs Andrey Rublev

Novak Djokovic has extended his win streak at the Australian Open. The former World No.1 has sailed past Andrey Rublev 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, 25th January 2023. Djokovic will now meet Tommy Paul in the semifinals of the Grand Slam event.

Djokovic was taking on the highest-ranked opponent of his Melbourne campaign so far in World No. 6 Rublev, But he took command early and barely looked back in the pair’s maiden Grand Slam meeting. The fourth seed accelerated to a comfortable two-hour, three-minute victory on Rod Laver Arena.

“I cannot be happier with my tennis, honestly. I’m playing very solid from the back of the court and really love playing in these conditions on this court. It’s definitely the most special court for me,” said Djokovic after the match.

Women’s Singles

Karolina Pliskova vs Magda Linette (Linette WINS 6-3, 7-5)

Karolina Pliskova’s serve deserted her at the worst possible time as she fell to a 6-3 7-5 defeat by Magda Linette in the Australian Open quarter-finals on Wednesday but the Czech said she would take some positives from her run at Melbourne Park.

The former world number one slipped into the second week of the tournament with little fanfare and reached her second straight Grand Slam
quarter-final after her run at last year’s U.S. Open.

“Super disappointed about today, because I just thought this was a match which I should win and I could win,” Pliskova, who missed last year’s tournament due to an arm fracture, told reporters. “Obviously the serve was not great today at all.

Aryna Sabalenka vs Donna Vekic

Fifth seed Aryna Sabalenka outmuscled Donna Vekic 6-3 6-2 in a ferocious battle of big hitters on Wednesday to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open for the first time.

The 24-year-old, the only top-10 seed left in the draw, took her chances in a physical one-hour first set littered with break points before running away with the second.

Vekic had held a 5-1 career record against Sabalenka but was unable to match the level of the new, improved version of the Belarusian with 13 double faults not helping the Croatian’s cause.

Sabalenka completed the semi-final line-up after 109 minutes on Rod laver Arena and will play Polish surprise package Magda Linette on Thursday for a place in her first Grand Slam final.
