Australian Open Final: Ash Barty CROWNED CHAMPION World No.1 Ash Barty is crowned champion of Australian Open 2022. She won the match in straight sets after defeating World No.27 Danielle Collins in a gruelling FINAL. As a result, she has become the country’s first player after 44 years to win the year’s first grand slam after Chris O’ Niel in 1978 in Melbourne Park. The game began on an equal note before Barty dominated Collins to take the opening set. The American tried to stage a comeback in the second set in the final showdown. She broke Barty thrice but eventually lost it from a 5-1 lead. The match ended 6-3, 7-6 in favour of Ash Barty in an hour and 27 minutes.

The 25-year-old didn’t lose a set en route to lifting the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup for the first time and extended her head-to-head record over Collins to four wins from their five encounters.

Collins, 28, was playing in her first major final in her 17th main draw appearance, and her career-best run at a Slam will see her crack the top 10 for the first time when the post-Australian Open rankings are released on Monday.


The winners of the men’s and women’s singles trophies at Melbourne Park will each pocket $2.875 million (215254448.50 INR), while the runners-up will receive $1.575 million.
