Former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini has withdrawn from the Australian Open 2024 owing to a right foot injury. The former world no. 6 has been struggling with injuries for the past two years and will move out of the ATP top 100 after the event is over.
However, one man who isn’t too sad about Berrettini’s withdrawal from the event is Stefanos Tsitsipas. The world no. 7 from Greece was supposed to play the Italian in the very first round.
Marked down as one of the best round-one matches of the tournament, Tsitsipas would have been dreading the clash with an upset in the first round looming over his head.
Now, Stefanos Tsitsipas will face lucky loser Zizou Bergs in the first round of the Australian Open 2024.
Since his first-round loss at the Australian Open last year, Berrettini has withdrawn from or pulled out of multiple tournaments.
His US Open mid-match retirement last year was later revealed to be due to an ankle injury on his right foot, and although he may have looked ready to return to professional tennis, it seems like his right foot is still the source of misery for him.
