AO 2024: Ben Shelton gives ‘classy’ response to Djokovic’s ‘unsportsmanlike’ comment

Djokovic was talking about the duo's meeting in the semifinals of the US Open 2023.

Despite being 15 years his junior, Ben Shelton has shown that he’s a bigger man than Novak Djokovic. After his straight sets win over Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round of the Australian Open 2024, the young American star was asked what he felt about Djokovic calling him ‘unsportsmanlike’.

To everyone’s surprise, Ben Shelton decided not to say anything about the matter at all. In his presser after his win, Shelton refused to talk about it, claiming it’s a thing of the past.

“I don’t really have anything else to say about the whole US Open situation. I feel like I’ve been asked about it constantly in the last four or five months. I feel like I’ve said my peace on the matter. I would rather just let it settle and move forward. We’re in Australia now, and we’re at the Australian Open and not at the US Open anymore.”

For the unaware, while talking with L’Équipe, Djokovic claimed that Ben Shelton “did not behave properly, with respect, on the court and before the match.“.

At 36, one would expect Djokovic to be the more mature one, but in this case, Shelton has remained the bigger man.
