Australian Open 2024: Aryna Sabalenka matches Serena Williams’ unique feat with win over Amanda Anisimova

Aryna Sabalenka, the defending Australian Open champion, has replicated a unique feat previously accomplished only by Serena Williams.

Defending Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka has achieved a remarkable feat, matching Serena Williams as the first player since the American tennis icon to win 11 consecutive matches at Melbourne Park. Sabalenka, 25, clinched the Australian Open title last year with seven victories and has continued her dominance in the current tournament with four straight-set wins.

In her latest match on Sunday, the No. 2 seed defeated Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 6-2, securing her spot in the quarterfinal. This victory marks Sabalenka’s 11th consecutive win at Melbourne Park, a feat last accomplished by Serena Williams between 2017 and 2019.

Sabalenka’s strong performance against Anisimova included an early break for a 3-0 lead, maintaining control throughout the match. Her next opponent is 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova, and Sabalenka, with a 5-1 head-to-head record against Krejcikova, remains the favourite.
