Australian Open 2022: Tennis Community rallies behind World No.1 Novak Djokovic, says politics shouldn’t interfere with sports
The Serbian was granted a medical exemption to defend his Australian Open title. But he was stranded at the Melbourne airport after the Australian government said his visa had been denied and he would be removed from the country.
Australia Prime Minister Scott Morrison wrote: “Mr Djokovic’s visa has been cancelled. Rules are rules, especially when it comes to our borders. No one is above these rules. Our strong border policies have been critical to Australia having one of the lowest death rates in the world from COVID, we are continuing to be vigilant.”
