In a statement, the Australian Open revealed that Emma Raducanu will not be participating in the upcoming Melbourne Summer Set starting on January 3. The British teenager sensation was amongst the biggest draws of the WTA event, but will now drop out of the competition as she prepares for the Australian Open 2022.
The reigning US Open champion said, “The timing to compete in the first Melbourne event this week is too soon for me, having just returned from isolation.”

Raducanu, who became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam when she triumphed at Flushing Meadows in September, had pulled out of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship exhibition event in Abu Dhabi last month after contracting the virus.
The 19-year-old Raducanu was made an MBE — or Member of the Order of the British Empire — by the queen during the New Year’s honours. It caps a remarkable year for Raducanu, whose U.S. Open win catapulted her to instant stardom in Britain. She was also named the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year for 2021 after becoming the first British woman to win a Grand Slam tournament since Virginia Wade in 1977.
“This year has been full of amazing surprises for me, so to end 2021 with this appointment is very special,” Raducanu said.
