Asian Games: Indian Men’s Volleyball team stuns South Korea, win 3-2

Indian Rowers impress in the heats in the Asian Games. The Men's Four Coxless team finished first and qualified for the final. India's Modern Pentathlete Mayank Chaphekar meanwhile finished 28th in Fencing.

The Indian men’s volleyball team has won 3-2 against higher-ranked South Korea in a close battle here. This mean India has won both their matches in their pool now.

Earlier in Rowing, the Men’s Four Coxless team qualified directly to the final. The team comprising Jawinder Singh, Bheen Singh, Punit Kumar and Ashish finished first in the heats. Meanwhile, Mayank Chaphekhar made his debut as the first-ever Indian to feature in Modern Pentathlon in Asian Games. He finished 28th in Fencing.

Modern Pentathlon (Fencing)

  • Mayank Chaphekar – The Indian finished 28th out of 29 competitors with 166 points. In the 28 matches played, he won only eight, and lost 20.

Men’s Volleyball

  • India vs Korea The Indian men’s volleyball team stunned the second seeds South Korea 3-2. With this win they advance to the next round, where they could face Chinese Taipei.

Rowing

Indian Rowers won three medals in the previous edition of the Asiad. It includes a gold medal from the Quadruple Sculls team. Out of the four members of that team only Sukmeet Singh will represent the country in the same event at Hangzhou. He will be in action alongside Satnam Singh, Parmar Singh and Jakhar Khan on Tuesday.

In Men’s double sculls and Men’s Lightweight double sculls Indians have impressed by finishing second in the heats. India’s Men’s eight with coxwain team also finished second.

Modern Pentathlon (Fencing)

Mayank Chaphekar will become the first-ever Modern Pentathlete from India to compete in the Asian Games. He was drafted into the squad at the last moment by the Sports Ministry.

He is the only Indian to compete in the Modern Pentathlon in this edition. Chaphekar will be in action in the Men’s Individual Fencing Ranking round on Wednesday.

Men’s Volleyball

India’s Men’s Volleyball team began their campaign with a dominating victory against Cambodia. The 19th ranked Asian team defeated the much lower ranked opponents in straight sets 25-14, 25-13, 25-19.

The team will next face a big challenge as they are set to take on a higher-ranked opponent in South Korea. Ranked 27th in the World Rankings, Korea is the second-highest ranked Asian team. The Koreans won the silver medal in the previous edition of the Asiad.
