Asian Games India wrap, Sept 20: Volleyball team stuns South Korea, rowers reach final

On day two of the Asian Games, India had events lined up in volleyball, rowing, and modern pentathlon.

The Indian contingent had a memorable outing on the second day of the Asian Games as the men’s volleyball team scripted an upset win over world no. 27 team South Korea 3-2. This is a remarkable win context of the Games, as the Indian team moved a step closer to a medal, which has eluded them since 1986. There were positive results coming from rowing as well, which sums up India’s great day.

Indian Men’s Volleyball Team Shines

A result that no one would have expected, the Indian men’s volleyball team got the better of their South Korean opponents. India won 3-2 (25-27, 29-27, 25-22, 20-25, 17-15). With a win over the second seeds, India have topped the Pool C now. With this, they have also entered the Round of 12, in the competition. In their next match, they could be either up against Chinese Taipei, or Pakistan, whoever finishes second in Pool D. Earlier on Tuesday, the Indians put up a dominant performance to outclass Cambodia 3-0. India comfortably defeated lower-ranked Cambodia 25-14, 25-13, 25-19 in a Pool C match.

Rowers impress on First Day

The Indian Rowing team began the Asian Games campaign in China with impressive performances on Wednesday. Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh, competing in Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls, securing the second position in the heats. Their compatriots Satnam Singh and Parminder Singh also finished second in their respective Heat. In the Lightweight Men’s Light-weight Doubles sculls, Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh finished with a time of 6:27.45. They finished behind Chinese duo Junjie Fan and Man Sun.

Meanwhile, in the Men’s Doubles skulls, Satnam Singh and Parminder Singh also produced a good result. The duo ended up in the second spot behind China’s Zhiyu Liu and Liang Zhang. Both the pairs will next compete in the Repechage round for a place in the final.

Forgettable Outing for Mayank Chaphekar

Mayank Chaphekar ended 28th out of 29 competitors in the fencing competition of the modern pentathlon on Wednesday. Overall he secured 166 points only. In the 28 matches played, he won eight and lost 20.
