Asian Games: India Men & Women team eye semifinal spots – Check Full Schedule

Action in Badminton at the Asian Games is underway. India Women are facing Mongolia in the team event.

India is eyeing a strong show in Badminton in the Asian Games 2023. HS Prannoy and PV Sindhu are leading a 19-member strong Indian team in the quadrennial event. The action in the sport is underway with the team event. Individual events will then begin from 2nd October.

PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal were the only Indians to seal a podium finish at the 2018 Asian Games. Indian shuttlers eye a much better show against fellow Asian heavyweights in the upcoming continental event.

Asian Games Badminton Schedule

A total of 16 teams will feature in the Badminton Team event at the Asian Games. The team event will be held separately for Men and Women. Every tie in the team event will feature three singles matches and two doubles matches.

The team event begins on 28th September with the Round of 16. The final will be held on 1st October. Every match in the team event will be a knockout.

Team Event Schedule

  • Round of 16 – 28th September
  • Quarterfinal – 29th September
  • Semifinal – 30th September
  • Final – 1st October

India have so far won five bronze medals combined in the Men and Women’s Team event. The most recent medal in Asian Games team event for India came in the 2014 edition. Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy were all part of the team that win the bronze medal back then.

Meanwhile, it has been 37 years since Indian won a medal in the Men’s team event. The last podium finish for the Indian Men came in the 1986 edition. Prakash Padukone, Syed Modi, Vimal Kumar were all part of the side that won the bronze medal.

Indian Men’s team won the Thomas Cup last year and there are huge expectations from the Indian Men especially this year to seal a podium finish in the team event.

Individual Event Schedule

Every match in the individual event will also be a knockout. Players will be in action across five disciplines – Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.

  • 1st Round – 2nd October
  • 2nd Round – 3rd October
  • 3rd Round – 4th October
  • Quarterfinal – 5th October
  • Semifinal – 6th October
  • Final – 7th October

PV Sindhu is the only Indian to win a silver medal in the Asian Games. She achieved the feat in the last edition at Jakarta in 2018. Including Sindhu’s medal, Indians have so far won only five medals in the individual events in the Asian Games.

While Sindhu is struggling for form this season, HS Prannoy, who is ranked World No.7 in Men’s Singles is one of the strong contenders for a podium finish in the upcoming edition. In the Men’s Doubles World No.3 pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are also the favourites.

Women’s doubles: Gayatri Gopichand/Treesa Jolly, Ashwini Ponnappa /Tanisha Crasto (Individual/Team)

Mixed doubles: Rohan Kapoor /N Sikki Reddy, Sai Pratheek K/Tanisha Crasto.
