Asian Games: After 41 years, India bags gold in Equestrian Dressage Team event

Anush Agarwalla, Hriday Vipul, Divyakriti and Sudipti Hajela gave India its third gold medal in the ongoing editon of the Asian Games

India scripted history at the Asian Games on Tuesday, 26th September 2023. Anush Agarwalla, Hriday Vipul, Divyakriti and Sudipti Hajela clinched a gold medal in Equestrian Dressage team event by registering a huge score of 209.205. This is India’s first-ever gold in Equestrian at the Asiad after 41 years. India last finished on the top of the podium in the sport way back in 1982.

With a host of athletes participating from all across Asia, it is the Indian Quartet who emerged victorious after a competition that has lasted for nearly 10 hours.

Anush Agarwalla and his horse ETRO scored the maximum score at 71.088. Hriday and his horse Chheda-Emerald scored 69.941. Divyakriti Singh-Adrenalin Firdod scored 68.176, while Sudipti Hajela-Chinski got 66.706. India finished with an overall score of 209.205 to finish above China’s 204.882, who were the favourites to win the title.

Asian Games – Who last won gold medal for India in Equestrian?

At the 1982 edition held in New Delhi, India bagged three gold medals in the sport. Men’s team comprising Raghubir Singh, Ghulam Mohammed Bishal Singh and Milkha Singh finished on the top of the podium in the team event.

Meanwhile, Raghubir Singh won gold in the individual eventing. Ruender Singh Brar too stood on the top of the podium in Individual tent pegging. 1982 edition was also the first time Equestrian was introduced in the Asiad.

India won three more medals in team eventing in 1994, 1998 and 2002 editions. At Jakarta in 2018, India’s Fouaad Mirza bagged the silver medal in individual eventing. He also won another silver in Men’s Team eventing alongside Rakesh Kumar, Ashish Malik and Jitender SIngh.
