Asian Games 2023: Sports in which Olympic quotas are at stake

So far, eight players in athletics and seven shooters have already qualified for Paris 2024 from India.

With just a few days to go before the start of the Asian Games 2023, this year’s continental showpiece event is going to be of great value for some of the Indian athletes. In certain sports, the Asian Games 2023 will offer the quotas for Paris 2024. InsideSport takes a look at the sports and, the players who could win the quotas for India.

Archery

India has a solid chance of bagging some Olympic quotas in recurve archery. Compound archery is not a part of the Olympic roster. Meanwhile, five quotas will be available in the individual and mixed team categories. The men’s and women’s team quotas will be decided later at the Asian Championships. For now, the winners of the mixed team, and gold and silver individual medalists will make the cut.

Boxing

India is sending a team of 13 boxers to the Asian Games 2023, and all of them have a chance to make the cut for the next Olympics. In men’s boxing, only the gold and the silver medalist will take the bus to Paris, while in the women’s section, all the semi-finalists will enter the Olympics, except for the 66 kg and 75 kg categories. It is needless to say quotas, as well as medals, will be expected from Deepak Bhoria and Nishat Dev in the men’s section. World Champions Lovlina Borgohain and Nikhat Zareen will be favorites in the women’s section.

Sailing

India is sending a 15-member sailing team for the Asian Games 2023 and it would be interesting to see if we can get some quotas. All eyes will be on Vishnu Saravanan, Nethra Kumanan, KC Ganapathy, and Varun Thakkar. In some events, only the gold medalists will make the cut, while in others, all the medalists will get the quotas.

Hockey

Only the winners of the competition in men’s and women’s categories will win quotas. Last time around, the Indian men’s team had won a bronze, while the women had won a silver. The men’s team lost to Malaysia in the semis and then won against Pakistan in the bronze medal match. On the other hand, the women’s team remained unbeaten till the final and lost to Japan 1-2. This time, both the Indian teams are the best in Asia, and it will be a huge surprise if they don’t seal the deal here. Both teams have a point to prove, and if they fail to qualify here, they will have to play in other qualification tournaments.
