Asian Games: Indian rowing contingent leaves for China

The team will attend a training camp in China, before they go to the Games village in Hangzhou.

Asian Games: The Indian rowing team, which is part of the Asian Games 2023, left for Hangzhou, China on Wednesday. The rowing team comprises of 43 members in all (20 Men and 13 Women) and 10 coaching staff. This is by far the biggest rowing cotingent that Indian has sent to the Asian Games.

For the first time, the Women’s Eight event has been included in the Asian Games. India too is fielding a 13-member women’s team for the event which augurs well for the growth of the sport in the country.

The contingent was given a rousing send-off by the officials of Sports Authority of India (SAI) Mumbai ahead of their departure for China.

Prior to the start of the competition, the team will be training in a government funded (to the tune of Rs 1 crore) International Training Camp in Hangzhou for a week. The team will then head to the Games village on September 16. It will give them time to get acclimatized with the conditions when the competition starts.

Earlier this week, Indian sailors and the first batch of boxers also left for China. While Indian boxers are training in Wuyishan City, Indian sailors are training in Ningbo Xiangshan Sailing Centre. It is where the Sailing competitions would be held in the event.

In the last edition, the Indian team had won three medals. It includes one gold and two bronze medals. The Indian Rowers will be hoping for a much better show this time around.
