At the Almaty competition last year, India won 14 medals, including five gold and six silver, to rank third in the medal table. However, the men’s and women’s freestyle wrestlers had won all of the medals. Sunil Kumar, a two-time medalist in Ulaanbaatar, was India’s best shot for a medal.
The 23-year-old from Dabarpur village in Haryana won bronze in the 87kg category. Sunil defeated local boy Batbayar Lutbayar by ‘technical superiority’ after taking a 5-0 lead early in the bout. In his semifinal match, the Indian lost 8-0 by ‘technical fall’ to Uzbekistan’s Jalgasbay Berdimuratov, the 82kg gold medalist from the previous competition. Sunil was seeded fourth in the quarterfinals, and his first match was against Sumi Masato of Japan, which the Indian won 5-3.
