Indian shuttler Ashmita Chaliha stunned World No. 10 Beiwen Zhang to enter the Malaysia Masters quarter-finals. Chaliha beat Zhang 2-1 in a tight game to advance to the next round. Chaliha reached the round of 16 with a straight 21-17 21-16 win over qualifier Sih Yun Lin of Chinese Taipei earlier.
Ashmita started the game on a high winning the first set 21-12. However, she faltered in the second 1–21 before picking up the third set by a narrow margin of 21-19 to knock out Beiwen Zhang.
