Arctic Open: Sindhu’s campaign ends, loses to Wang Zhi Yi in semifinal

PV Sindhu’s campaign at the Arctic Open 2023 has come to an end. The World No.13 bowed out from the semifinal in the tournament. She suffered a 12-21, 21-11, 7-21 against China’s Wang Zhi Yi on Saturday, 14th October.

Sindhu lost the opening game 12-21 before bouncing back in the second 21-11. However, the Chinese upped the ante in the final game, beating Sindhu 21-7.

With the win, Wang Zhi Yi clinched her first win against the Indian in her career. Earlier, Sindhu had a 2-0 head-to-head record against the Chinese. They last met at the Singapore Open last year and Sindhu won the contest 21-9, 11-21, 21-15.

The Indian had begun the tournament with a win over Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in the opening round, followed by a straight game victory over Hsu Wen-chi of Taiwan in the second round.

In the quarterfinal, Sindhu prevailed over Nguyen Thuy Linh of Vietnam before her semifinal loss that ended India’s run in the tournament.

Sindhu recently also participated in the Asian Games in Hangzhou, where she could not progress beyond the quarterfinal stage in the women’s singles competition.
