Anshu Malik lost to USA's vastly experienced Helen Louise Maroulis 2-7 in the round of 16 of Paris Olympics.

Indian wrestling star Anshu Malik has made a tough yet courageous decision to step away from the mat temporarily. The 57kg grappler, who represented India at the Paris Olympics, has announced a break to focus on her physical and mental health. The decision comes after a challenging pre-quarterfinal loss to the formidable Helen Maroulis of the United States.

Break for Anshu Malik

The defeat, while undoubtedly a bitter pill to swallow, has prompted Malik to prioritize her overall well-being. The young wrestler, who had harbored Olympic dreams since the tender age of 12, has expressed her deep disappointment but also her unwavering determination to return stronger. “The Olympics are now over, and with it, the dream that I had for 12 years is also over,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “But this will be a new beginning for LA 2028.”

Malik’s hiatus also shines a spotlight on the challenges faced by Indian athletes. The pressure to represent a billion people can be immense, and the emotional toll can be significant. It is essential to create a supportive environment for athletes to thrive, both during their peak performance years and beyond.

Malik’s impressive performances at the Asian Olympic Qualifiers, culminating in a silver medal at the Budapest Ranking Series, had positioned her as a strong contender. However, the Olympic stage, with its unparalleled intensity, proved to be a formidable challenge.
