Former World Number 2 Anett Kontaveit announced her shock retirement from Tennis on Tuesday. She retires from sport after suffering degenerative changes of the lumbar discs in her spine.
The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has ranked Anett Kontaveit as high as world No. 2, a position she first attained on June 6, 2022, making her the highest-ranked Estonian player in history. She was the first Estonian to compete in the WTA Finals in 2021, making it all the way to the championship match.
In the category of doubles, Kontaveit has a career-high ranking of No. 95, attained on March 2, 2020.
Kontaveit has won eleven singles titles and five doubles wins on the ITF Circuit in addition to six singles titles on the WTA Tour. In 2020, she competed at the Australian Open, where she reached the quarterfinals, giving her best major result to date.
In the WTA 1000 finals of the 2022 Qatar Open and the 2018 Wuhan Open, Anett Kontaveit has advanced twice.
She is retiring at the age of 27-year-old.
