All Indian clash at French Open! Rohan Bopanna draws N Sriram Balaji in the third round

Prior to this victory, Bopanna and Ebden had a poor 1-3 record on clay. This included two first-round exits and one second-round exit at the Masters.

Rohan Bopanna has started his bid to claim the second Slam of the year, the French Open. The 44-year-old, who won the Australian Open with Matthew Ebden in January, is currently gunning for the Grand Slam (winning all four majors in a year). Up next for him is fellow Indian N Sriram Balaji in the third round.

After beating the unranked Brazilian duo of Marcelo Zormann and Orlando Luz 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in the opening round, Bopanna and Ebden have been handed a second-round walkover from their opponents Thiago Seyboth Wild and Sebastien Baez.

Sriram Balaji is in fine form and will be tough to tackle. He’s paired up with Mexican Miguel Reyes-Varelas for the French Open instead of his regular partner Andre Begemann, who is currently injured. So far, he’s just lost one set, while Bopanna, despite getting a walkover in the second round, has lost a similar number of sets.

Rohan Bopanna’s record on clay in 2024

Despite winning his maiden Slam on clay (the French Open mixed doubles title in 2017), his performance this year hasn’t been great. Including this match, he has a 2-3 record on clay. These include three early exits at the Masters. Until the hard court swing, he and Ebden were ranked number one in the world. But their poor results have seen them drop down to two. They can claim the top rank back if they outdo Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos at the French Open.

  • Monte Carlo Masters (Round 1 exit)
  • Madrid Masters (Round 1 exit)
  • Rome Masters (Round 2 exit)
  • French Open (Advanced to Round 2)
