Canelo Alvarez Discusses Defeat to Dmitry Bivol “Still a Pain”

Just before Canelo Alvarez vs Jermell Charlo, Canelo discusses his defeat to Dmitry Bivol.

Canelo Alvarez has said that it was difficult to deal with his one loss in the boxing arena in almost ten years.

When he stepped up to the light heavyweight division in May 2022 to take on Dmitry Bivol, one of the division’s titleholders, the incumbent undisputed champion in the 168-pound division suffered a setback.

After a gruelling 12-round contest, Alvarez was defeated by the Russian opponent on all three judges’ scores of 115-113.

Insidesport

Alvarez’s defeat of Caleb Plant in November 2021 marked a great accomplishment for him because it unified the super middleweight division.

As per a post on X made by Michael Benson, he quoted Canelo’s words, “I wasn’t 100% physically speaking, my hand wasn’t 100%, I couldn’t train 100%. A week before the fight, I suffered a rib injury during training. I shouldn’t have fought. That defeat is still a pain in my heart; I still haven’t gotten over that moment. It affected me deeply because I shouldn’t have lost, I am simply better than him.”

Alvarez had only ever lost one previous fight in his career before this one, and that was against Floyd Mayweather in 2013.
