India’s double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker’s controversy has erupted once again as her coach, Jaspal Rana has vocally criticised the Sports Ministry, Sports Authority of India, and the National Rifle Association of India for neglecting her achievements. “I will hold all of them responsible. How can anyone even say Manu did not apply? She made history by becoming the first Indian to win two Olympic medals in the same Olympics. Her name should have been there automatically,” Rana stated in an interview. Manu Bhaker is reportedly overlooked for the Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award, as her name is not included in the list as of now.
Criticism of new application requirements from Rana
Rana expressed his dissatisfaction with the new requirement for athletes to apply directly for awards, calling it unfair. The existing norms allow for self-nomination, but the selection committee can consider others who haven’t applied. Rana questions the logic behind forcing top athletes to apply for recognition, arguing that awards should be based on merit alone.
“It’s really appalling. Why should a top sportsperson apply or request for an award? Awards should come naturally and automatically. How can it be ignored? There has to be some system in place,” Rana said.
Manu Bhaker’s Father’s reaction to the snub
Manu’s father Ram Kishan Bhaker also lashed out on authorities. He mentioned that Manu had followed the required process for award applications and expressed frustration over the situation. “There is no point in playing and winning rewards for your country and in turn beg for recognition,” he said. Despite being at sea, Ram Kishan stressed Manu’s achievements and her consistent efforts to apply for prestigious awards.
Manu Bhaker’s achievements
Manu Bhaker created history by winning two Olympic medals in the same edition, a remarkable feat for any Indian athlete. She earned bronze medals in both the 10m air pistol individual and mixed team events. Her exceptional performance has left many puzzled about her exclusion from the Khel Ratna list.
Manu Bhaker to not get the Khel Ratna?
While the sports ministry claimed that the final list is not yet confirmed, a ministry source indicated that Manu’s name is likely to be included soon. “There is no final list of nominees at this point,” said the official, suggesting hope for Manu’s recognition.
