Three Indian players lose in Arctic Open Round of 16, Lakshya Sen carries nation’s hopes

While the day brought disappointments for several Indian players, Lakshya Sen remains a bright spot for Indian badminton at the Arctic Open 2024.

India faced a disappointing day at the Arctic Open 2024 as three of its top badminton players exited the tournament in the Round of 16. Kiran George, Unnati Hooda, and Malvika Bansod all fell short in their respective matches, leaving Lakshya Sen as India’s last real hope in the tournament.

Kiran George bows out against Top Seed

Kiran George’s campaign at the Arctic Open came to a difficult end as he faced off against Indonesia’s top seed Jonatan Christie. George fought valiantly but couldn’t overcome Christie’s dominant form, losing in straight games, 17-21, 8-21.

The defeat marked the end of George’s journey in the men’s singles competition, with Christie showcasing why he is considered a top contender in the tournament.

Unnati Hooda and Malvika Bansod fall short in Women’s Singles

In the women’s singles category, both Unnati Hooda and Malvika Bansod faced tough opponents and were unable to progress beyond the Round of 16. Hooda went up against Canada’s Michelle Li, a seasoned player, and despite a spirited fight in the second game, she lost 10-21, 19-21. Hooda’s performance in the second set showed resilience, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win.

Malvika Bansod faced a formidable challenge in Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon, a former world champion. Bansod struggled to match Intanon’s pace and precision, ultimately losing in straight games, 15-21, 08-21.

Both Indian women’s singles players put in commendable efforts, but their campaigns came to an end in the Round of 16.

Lakshya Sen, India’s last hope

With the early exits of Kiran George, Unnati Hooda, and Malvika Bansod, all eyes are now on Lakshya Sen, the only Indian remaining in the men’s singles in tournament. Sen advanced to the Round of 16 after his opponent Rasmus Gemke withdrew from their opening round match.

The young star, who narrowly missed an Olympic medal in Paris, faces a tough challenge against seventh-seeded Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei. Sen will look to keep India’s hopes alive and continue his strong run at the Arctic Open.

Challenging Path Ahead in Arctic Open 2024

While the day brought disappointments for several Indian players, Lakshya Sen remains a bright spot for Indian badminton at the Arctic Open 2024. His performance in the upcoming Round of 16 match will be crucial as he seeks to keep India’s campaign alive in the tournament.
