Everyone knows the iceberg analogy – where what you see is just a fraction of the whole. Abhishek’s career in the Indian men’s hockey team over the past two years mirrors this concept. The 24-year-old has quickly become one of the brightest stars in a team undergoing significant changes post the Tokyo Olympics. Despite his rapid rise, much of his hard work remains hidden beneath the surface.

Meteoric rise for Abhishek

Abhishek’s journey to becoming a crucial player for India is a story of perseverance. He has been integral to India’s goalscoring ambitions and medal hopes for the Paris Olympics, which is a result of 16 years of relentless effort before breaking through.

His shining moment came against the world champions at Paris Olympics, Belgium. Abhishek’s brilliant individual effort gave India the perfect start. He controlled the ball under pressure and unleashed a powerful shot from the center of the D, leaving Belgium’s world-class goalkeeper, Vincent Vanasch, with no chance to save it. Though Belgium won the match 2-1, Abhishek’s performance was a testament to his talent.

Despite facing setbacks, including being out of the junior team for three years, Abhishek persisted. He honed his skills with Punjab National Bank before finally getting the national call-up. in 2022.

Off the field, Abhishek is calm and reserved. He speaks softly, avoids eye contact, and prefers actions over words. However, on the field, he transforms into a different person – quick on his feet, with impeccable ball control and a keen sense of the game.

“I am not an introvert,” he had told The Hindu. “I did not expect big things when I first came into the national setup. I thought of making the core group of 33, maybe playing a few test matches, and gradually growing. But I have been lucky to get important opportunities soon after joining the camp,” he adds.

Hard Work and Determination

Abhishek attributes much of his success to hard work. His dedication is evident in his fitness regimen and his relentless pursuit of improvement. With 33 goals in 75 games, his performance speaks volumes.

Abhishek’s first taste of international hockey came in the Under-18 Asia Cup squad. “I had been playing hockey for 10 years, and it was the one thing I had been dreaming of – wearing India colours, playing for the country. It felt like the beginning of a very long road,” he recalls.

Abhishek’s journey is a testament to his talent, hard work, and determination. As India looks to the future, his inclusion in the team’s play is crucial.
