Indian teenage tennis player Manas Dhamne caused a significant upset on Thursday after defeating top seed and World no. 378 Ionel Nicholas David 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-5 in the quarterfinals of the International Tennis Federation M15 Targu Jiu in Romania.
The 16-year-old, currently ranked World No. 1213, saved three match points in the third set before clinching the victory. This win was a major confidence boost for Dhamne, who is still relatively new to the professional tennis circuit.
Ionel defeated Indian number 1 earlier
Interestingly, Ionel, who was ranked as high as 184 last year, had previously defeated Indian No. 1 Sumit Nagal on clay with a scoreline of 7-5, 7-6 just a week before Nagal’s Rome Challenger title.
While Dhamne’s victory was a significant upset, it was not entirely surprising. The Indian has been demonstrating considerable promise and has been showing rapid improvement in recent months. His triumph over Ionel underscores his talent and determination.
