Canelo next fight: Boxing News: Canelo Alvarez is reportedly scheduled to return on May 6 and defend his undisputed super middleweight world titles against John Ryder. Following his win over Gennadiy Golovkin in September 2022, Canelo was viably eligible to rematch Dmitry Bivol. For more combat sports news, follow Insidesport.IN.

He had claimed to avenge the defeat against Bivol after beating ‘GGG’. To smoothen things up, Canelo Alvarez won against Golovkin and Bivol vanquished ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez, citing the rematch as a potential fight. However, Canelo Alvarez seems to have changed his mind and is now aiming at John Ryder for his next appearance.

According to Michael Benson’s tweet, Canelo Alvarez vs John Ryder will take place in Jalisco, Mexico, which is Canelo’s hometown. The Mexican pride fought in his country last when he knocked out Kermit Cintron at the Monumental Plaza in 2011. His homecoming is expected to be a massive event and a fighting festival for the fans. That said, John Ryder may not be the opponent that boxing fans wanted to see against Canelo.

Is John Ryder a worthy opponent for Canelo Alvarez?

32-5 as a professional, John Ryder has never been a world champion. The 34-year-old Briton has lost some of the biggest bouts of his career and against those whom Canelo Alvarez beat lopsidedly (Rocky Fielding and Callum Smith). There’s no way John Ryder looks viable to match himself against Canelo on the papers.

Despite that, Ryder holds the WBO Interim super middleweight bet and is mandatory for Canelo’s WBO world title. He is clearly a massive underdog in the fight. It’s hard to picture him winning against Canelo Alvarez unless done in reality. However, boxing is a sport that is full of surprises and that validates The Gorilla’s chances against Canelo Alvarez.
