Cancelo vs Guardiola: Joao Cancelo talks about his future with Manchester City
Under Pep Guardiola Joao Cancelo went on to become one of the best full-backs in world football. However post FIFA World Cup, the Portuguese played just three matches out of 10 and was unhappy with his manager.
Despite a lack of game time, Cancelo said that he is ‘very grateful’ to Guardiola and was much more open to the prospect of returning to Manchester. He added, “In football you never know and maybe I’ll be back when the season is over”. Guardiola had also heaped praise on the fullback after being sent out on loan to Germany.
Guardiola had said, “First I wish him the very best in his four months [on loan]. Next season I don’t know what happens. An incredible figure in the last two leagues we won. After the World Cup, we make a pre-season and decided to play, in some patterns different. I like what I watch. I give more time to other players.”
He added, “His personality, mine, he loves to play. He trains the best, the situation he doesn’t play much. In the last years one of the players with more minutes. He needs to play to be happy, we decide to let him go to Munich. He wants to play every single game and hopefully he can in Munich.”

Will Joao Cancelo stay at Manchester City next season ?
With reports about Manchester City trying to pursue Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell, Bayern Munich is looking to make Cancelo’s loan move permanent. City is expected to ask for a fee of €70m for the Portuguese. Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic Speaking to BamS, said: “After the transfer was done, we actually thought again about how long we’ve been dealing with João. We came up with more than four years. Either our position was filled or we didn’t have the money for it”.
He added, “We’re playing with open cards. This sum is difficult for us to imagine in the next few years. If all sides really want a common solution, you can manage that in the end. He knows that he has been one of our dream players for years.”
