BWF World Tour Finals: Satwik Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty qualify: The Indian men’s doubles badminton pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty may have lost the semifinals of the Indonesia Open 2021 but the duo created history by qualifying for the Badminton World Tour Finals.

With clouds of uncertainty hovering over their place in the yearly tournament, Satwik and Chirag got a green flag with Akira Koga and Taichi Saito losing their semi-finals at the Indonesia Open.

By booking this ticket, the duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty became the first Indian men’s doubles badminton pair to qualify for this prestigious year-ending event.

BWF World Tour Finals: Satwik Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty become first Indian men’s pair to qualify for year-end tournament

Booking a place in the year-end event would have been easier had the Indian duo won the semifinals game against the World No. 1 pair of Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sukamuljo a.k.a the Minions. However, it could not happen as they were defeated 21-16, 21-18 putting an end to their Indonesia Open campaign and also a question mark on their place in the Badminton World Tour Finals.

The worries deepened for Satwik and Chirag after the loss as they were competing against the Japanese duo of Akira Koga and Taichi Saito, who were the hot favorites to find a place in the World Tour Finals. But with the Akira-Taichi duo losing to fellow Japanese shuttler duo of Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi, 22-20, 21-14, the road was cleared for the Indian pair.
