Sindhu who won the Gold medal at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games is said to have suffered a stress fracture on her right ankle. It is believed that Sindhu sustained the injury during CWG 2022 but played through it to win her maiden Commonwealth Games gold medal.

Confirming Sindhu’s injury to Sportstar, Sindhu’s father PV Ramana said that she suffered the injury during the quarterfinal of CWG 2022. “She played the semis despite severe pain before before winning the gold in the CWG with a heavily strapped ankle,” he said.

Sindhu played the quarterfinal contest against Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei where she lost the first game and came back to win the next two games to enter the semifinals. The World No.7 then defeated Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min and Canada’s Michelle Li in straight games in the semifinal and final to bag the gold medal.

Just before the Commonwealth Games, Sindhu won the Singapore Open title and was in a great form ahead of the World Championships.  Ramana further added that Sindhu’s focus will immediately be on recovery. “The focus will definitely be more on recovery and we will be targetting the Paris and Denmark Opens in mid-October.”

It is to be noted that Sindhu is the most successful Indian in the World Championships, having won five medals, that includes a gold in 2019, two silver medals and two bronze medals.
