It is not easy to give an accurate figure for boxers’ earnings considering the different complications involved in their negotiations. However, there are many reports which estimate the fighters’ potential earnings. And going by the reports, Canelo Alvarez earned the most money in boxing in 2022.
How much money did Canelo Alvarez earn in 2022?
Alvarez fought twice in 2022, first against Dmitry Bivol, where he took home a reported $40 million. This included a $15 million base pay and the remaining from the PPV share.
In his second fight of the year, Alvarez took on long-time rival Gennady Golovkin. Given the hype for the event, it is no surprise Alvarez earned a fortune. The Mexican took home a whopping $45 million plus PPV share. There is no update on how much the total figure was.
However, only considering what we know, Alvarez is already the highest-paid boxer with more than $85 million only from his fights. In addition, he would’ve earned a lot more from endorsements and sponsorship. As a result, Alvarez is the only combat sports athlete in Forbes’ list of the top 10 highest-paid athletes. The Mexican ranks number 8 with a value of $90 million.
Who could compete with Canelo Alvarez’s earnings in 2022?
In a lucrative sport like boxing, you have many fighters who can earn similar figures to Canelo Alvarez. Moreover, if it is a big fight involving two massive names in the sport, they could also earn close to $100 million in one night.
However, 2022 did not witness any such big events as the Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury bout fell through. Despite this, Tyson Fury was the closest to Canelo Alvarez. ‘The Gypsy King’ earned $34 million for his win over Dillian Whyte and $10 million for his recent win over Derek Chisora.
Therefore, Alvarez is on top yet again. While this is no surprise to boxing fans, it could all change in 2023 if some of the big fights go ahead.
What do you make of these figures? Do you think Tyson Fury can knock Alvarez off his perch in 2023?
