Outside the Stadium of Light is a statue of legendary player and manager Bob Stokoe, who managed Sunderland in their famous FA Cup triumph back in 1973. The Sunderland fans had placed flowers underneath the statue, but a 21-year-old Newcastle United fan urinated on it.

The video went viral instantly, and since then, the fan has also been arrested. “We are aware of a video circulating on social media which appears to show a man urinating on a memorial outside the Stadium of Light in Sunderland. A 21-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct and remains in police custody at this time,” a Northumbria police spokesperson said.
“We recognise that incidents of this nature can cause anger and frustration within our communities. We would ask everyone to please respect the ongoing investigation and refrain from anything that could jeopardise these live enquiries,” the spokesperson further added. Ironically, before becoming a manager of Sunderland, Stokoe was a Newcastle United player himself and played a key role in the Magpies’ FA Cup win in 1955.
