Stokes had previously mentioned his willingness to return home from the IPL early, even before joining the Super Kings. England play Ireland in a one-off Test starting on June 1. The match is widely tipped to be a practice game for the upcoming Ashes in England. ECB selectors are expected to name the squad in the coming days, with Stokes likely to lead.
Stokes has played only two games this season, scoring 7 and 8 after being signed for Rs 16.25 crore. He bowled a solitary over, conceding 18 runs. The England test skipper since suffered a toe injury and ‘another setback’ which kept him out of the side. He has however resumed training and has been available for the past week.
Nonetheless, Stokes’ availability with the ball in hand is still in question. The 31-year-old has struggled with a dodgy knee and is way off bowling full-time. CSK coach Stephen Fleming revealed Stokes was batting cover, but with Devon Conway in full flow, he was unlikely to make the cut.
