BCCI World Cup Shortlist: ICC World Cup 2023: BCCI has identified the core group of players for ODI World Cup 2023. However, three big names that miss the list are Shikhar Dhawan, Ravichandran Ashwin and Deepak Chahar. Dhawan’s dip in form and rise of Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan has forced the selectors to look beyond the veteran opener. Ashwin, who could have played a key role is also not part of the 20-man shortlist. Deepak Chahar with his injury struggles has also missed the cut. The biggest omission despite no fault of his own is Sanju Samson. Rohit Sharma will lead the squad with BCCI keeping its faith in him. The core’s first task is against SriLanka in the ODI series. - Shikhar Dhawan
- Ravichandran Ashwin
- Sanju Samson
- Deepak Chahar
- Shardul Thakur
Although officially dubbed as a review meeting, BCCI instead prepared a blueprint for World Cup 2023. The Indian board listened to Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid’s arguments about the injury crisis and brought back Yo-Yo test. Along with yo-yo, BCCI also added the DEXA test as a second parameter for selection.

Those 20 members will be rotated in the next 35 ODIs to keep them fresh. BCCI has also asked the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to monitor their workload and fitness till October. NCA will also work in tandem with IPL franchises to manage their workload.
However, with Dhawan, Ashwin and Chahar missing out, it is end of the road for at least two players. Dhawan (37) and Ashwin (36) are in the twilight of their careers. While Ashwin will still play Test cricket, it’s goodbye for Dhawan from Indian cricket.
For Deepak Chahar, the road is only getting tougher. Since his back and hamstring injury, he hasn’t been the same. The Chennai Super Kings pacer has once again injured his hamstring during the Bangladesh series. He is back at the NCA for further rehab. He is out of the reckoning for World Cup as well.
Shardul Thakur also hasn’t really lit up the space. He has faltered more often than not. Unlike Tets cricket, he also hasn’t been great with the bat in ODIs. He is out with Arshdeep coming in.
The biggest omission however is of Sanju Samson. The Rajasthan Royals captain is only 4th wicketkeeper in India squad. He is out of the race with too much competition in the middle order. Instead, he will play a big role in T20s under Hardik’s captaincy.

BCCI WC Shortlist: Who made the cut?
1. Rohit Sharma (capt): BCCI has kept faith on Rohit to continue leading India until 2023 WC. He is the captain of the ship.
2. Virat Kohli: The greatest ODI batter of the generation Virat Kohli is one of the first names in India’s WC probables.
3. Shubman Gill: After impressing in Tests, Shubman Gill has emerged as India’s one of the first-choice openers. He has even knocked Shikhar Dhawan out of the race.
4. Rishabh Pant (WK): Rishabh may have been dropped for the SriLanka series but he is very much in BCCI’s plans. The youngster is currently in hopsital after suffering a horrific car crash. But once he returns in the six months, he will be in contention for a spot.
5. KL Rahul (WK): Despite snatching vice-captaincy from him, KL Rahul is one of the contenders in ODIs. He has returned to form as well in the 50-over format. However, he will need to fight for a spot now. With Sanju Samson waiting in the wings besides Deepak Hooda, KL must perform to keep his place.
6. Hardik Pandya (VC): The newly promoted vice-captain is India’s most important player. He is the only legitimate seam-bowling all-rounder India has at the moment.
7. Ravindra Jadeja: Another injury-prone player is Ravindra Jadeja. But he is equally crucial as Hardik with his batting, bowling and fielding efforts.
8. Washington Sundar: With injuries in the past, Sundar is the replacement of Ashwin in white-ball cricket.
9. Axar Patel: With Jadeja suffering injuries too frequently, Axar has managed to shine in his absence.
10. Shreyas Iyer: India’s current best performer in ODIs, Iyer has made the No 3 slot his own. But when Virat Kohli comes back, he will have to fight for a spot with Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul.
11. Suryakumar Yadav: World No 1 T20 batter offers India flair and flexibility. He is the middle-order enforcer India need even in ODIs. But he will have to compete for a place and is not a guranteed starter.
12. Deepak Hooda: With all-round credentials, Deepak Hooda has pipped Sanju Samson for a spot in India’s 20-member probable.
13. Ishan Kishan (WK): With the fastest double-century, Ishan is India’s opener-elect in ODI World Cup. But he has to be consistent to pip Shubman Gill.
14. Yuzvendra Chahal: The premier leg-spinner might have missed the T20 World Cup but he is in India’s 20-man probables.
15. Kuldeep Yadav: Kuldeep completes the KulCha pair in Team India. However, he does not have a guaranteed spot in the Starting XI. Instead, he will have to fight for a spot with other spinners.
16. Jasprit Bumrah: After missing Asia Cup and T20 WC, Bumrah will lead India’s pace attack in WC. He is still out injured and the NCA is monitoring his fitness.
17. Mohammad Siraj/ Prasidh Krishna: Mohd Siraj and Prasidh Krishna are fighting for one spot. While the BCCI medical team is monitoring Prasidh’s recovery, Siraj can take the spot. He has put up a string of impressive performances.
18. Mohammad Shami: Despite late injury troubles, Shami is a crucial member of India’s ODI squad. He will form the three-member pace attack along side Jasprit Bumrah.
19. Arshdeep Singh: The only left-arm seamer in the India squad at present, Arshdeep has impressed in very little time he has been with the team. India has great expectations from him.
20. Umran Malik: India’s only genuine speedster, Umran is in the probables thanks to his 150-kph bullets. He will now have to be consistent with his performances.
