BCCI Selection Committee: BCCI CAC: Even though Test cricket has taken precedence in terms of team selection in Indian cricket, it is about to change. The new office bearers have now recognised that T20 speciality is a must when picking a player in T20 team. Hence, when the new Cricket Advisory Committee appoints new selection committee, at least one selector with experience in playing T20 cricket or coaching in IPL will be given preference. Hence, players with only Test caps will not be the first choice anymore, going away from Lodha recommendation. BCCI Selection Committee: What changes could new CAC bring in?

  • The new CAC will review the existing eligibility criteria set for selectors
  • The chief selector with most Test caps will continue
  • A former player who has only played T20s or ODIs for India could also be eligible
  • IPL coaching experience will be an added advantage
  • Priority will be to take the selection committee to up to speed, appointing the 5th selector.
  • The committee currently has only 4 members.

As per Lodha Committee recommendations, former players with Test caps can be eligible. But BCCI is set to follow its previous route. Even a player without any Test playing experience but T20 playing experience will be eligible. But the incoming Cricket Advisory Committee will restructure the existing selection committee eligibility criteria.

“Time has changed and it is important to recognise that T20 will dominate world cricket. So, you cannot have a former player in the selection panel without any experience in T20s, playing or coaching. When the new CAC is appointed, at least one selector in the committee will focus on T20s as we have a T20 WC every two years,” a top BCCI official told InsideSport.

Currently, head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma a lot of selection calls on T20 team. Sunil Joshi is the only selector with some T20 experience as he played in IPL for Royal Challengers Bangalore. The rest of the selection committee members have no T20 experience whatsoever.

Current Selection Committee:

  • Chetan Sharma (Test: 23, ODI: 65, FC: 121)
  • Sunil Joshi (Test: 15, ODI: 69, FC: 160)
  • Debasish Mohanty (Test: 2, ODI: 45, FC: 117)
  • Harvinder Singh (Test: 3, ODI: 16, FC: 109)

Hence, when the new Cricket Advisory Committee takes charge post T20 World Cup, their first task will be to sort the selection committee. While it is expected that Chetan Sharma will stay put as the chief selector, a lot will depend on how Team India performs at the T20 World Cup.

It is an open secret that Chetan and his panel’s performance and consistency in selection has been below par in recent times. Unless India performs very well at the World CUP, it could be curtains for India’s first hat-trick man in 50-over World Cup.

“It will be up to the new CAC to take a call on Chetan. Obviously, his performance will be reviewed and if there are results, why would anyone be replaced? We also have to understand that there will be another World Cup in a year and we would need some continuity. Whether Chetan stays on as the chief selector will depend on the incoming selectors’ profile,” the BCCI official told InsideSport.

However, Debasish Mohanty is set to go out as he will complete his four years in junior and senior selection committee combined. Whether he will be relieved of his duties before the completion of four years or after that is the question.

The rule that was applicable with Abbey Kuruvilla will also apply to Debu Mohanty. Debu was inducted by the COA in junior panel in early 2019 and he had served two years till 2021 before being upgraded to senior panel after Devang Gandhi completed his tenure,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Ajit Agarkar, who applied for the chief selector’s role last time is again a prime candidate. The former Indian pacer played 26 Tests and 191 ODIs besides 110 First Class matches. If he applies again and is selected, he will be the chief selector, replacing Chetan Sharma. The chief selector will continue to be selected based on the number of Test caps.
