BCCI New Selection Committee – Will Chetan Sharma have takers? After appointing Cricket Advisory Committee, BCCI will announce the new team of selection committee next week. The Indian board along with CAC have short-listed the candidates running for selection committee. CAC will now interview the shortlisted candidates and take a call by next week. However, the new BCCI and CAC aren’t sure about giving a 2nd chance to the former chairman of the selection committee Chetan Sharma. He has reapplied for the job. The CAC and selectors will have a big task ahead including a decision on India T20 Reboot. Follow Indian Cricket LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN.

“We have the CAC in place. We are shortlisting candidates for the selection committee at the moment. We should have the names by next week. The CAC will conduct the interviews and finalise the list,” a BCCI official told InsideSport.

BCCI Cricket Advisory Committee: Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjpe and Sulakshana Naik

However, there is a huge question mark on Chetan Sharma and Harvinder Singh. The two selectors have tenure left. While both have re-applied, some in the BCCI are not convinced. The two were not given new contracts. Instead, they had to reapply. By doing that, the BCCI essentially fired both the former selectors.

To note, Sulakshana Naik, who was part of the previous CAC remains in her position. It will be up to the two new members, Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape. What could work in Chetan Sharma’s favour is Malhotra’s close association with him in the past. InsideSport reached out to new CAC Member Jatin Paranjape. But he refused to confirm or deny the development.

“It will be a collective decision. Nobody is ruled out. Chetan has had a mixed bag. He succeeded in some and failed in some. Not winning Asia Cup and T20 World Cup is a collective failure. One cannot just blame the selectors or the players. Whether Chetan will be back, it will be a discussion,” the official said.

BCCI New Selection Committee: Big Meeting before Sri Lanka series

However, the incoming selection committee is set for a big meeting involving CAC and the BCCI. The first on agenda is split coaching. Although the idea has been doing rounds, it needs a seal of approval from the CAC. But the biggest decision will be around India cricket overhaul. BCCI are interested in pursuing split captaincy despite previously refusing to follow the path.

India Cricket Overhaul: Top items on agenda

  • Split coaching (Specialised coach for T20 team)
  • Split Captaincy (Rohit Sharma may be asked to step down from T20s with Hardik Pandya taking charge)
  • Review of T20 WC
  • Review of current coaches
  • Selection committee’s rotation policy

Split captaincy: However, BCCI is in dilemma at the moment. Virat Kohli was removed as ODI and Test captain as they did not want split capitancy. But with Rohit Sharma ageing, a need to set plans for the 2024 T20 WC has forced the board to rethink. Rohit Sharma will stay put as the ODI until 2023 World Cup. discussion on ODI and Test captaincy will only take place after the 2023 WC.

However, InsideSport understands that BCCI is ready to take the bold step and appoint a new captain for T20s. With not many T20s scheduled in 2023, Hardik Pandya will take charge of the T20 team. For that, the new selection committee must be on board. Former chairman of selection committee Chetan Sharma was not on board with different captains in white-ball cricket.

Split coaching: With more and more bilateral series, a need to look at alternatives is much-needed. BCCI could follow England’s footsteps in this regard. Although Dravid will stay on as the ODI coach, BCCI is mulling a decision to appoint a T20 coach. It’s not that Dravid hasn’t played T20s but like many others, he has been conservative in his approach.

“We can’t afford to lose repeatedly. We will not take chances anymore. We are already in discussion with Rohit Sharma and he is comfortable with idea of the appointment of new captain for the T20 format. We will do the same with Rahul. He without doubt is an asset. But there is too much on his plate and we want to reduce his load. We will soon meet him,” confirmed the top BCCI official.
