The BCCI Media Rights are likely to be delayed. The Indian Cricket Board appointed Ernst & Young (EY) as consultants but broadcasters have requested more time. BCCI were keen to finalise the deal before the Asia Cup, the process is set to be extended.
“The tender will be coming out soon. We’re planning to close the media rights process by August end,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said earlier this week.

One of the major reasons for the postponement is the impending Sony-Zee merger. The deal was expected to be finalised by December 2022, but legal proceedings have complicated matters. While there remain rumours regarding a possible cancellation, both parties remain keen to get it over the line.
Should the merger go through, a joint bid from Sony-Zee is expected to hold more force. It could create stiff competition for rights, with Disney Star and Viacom18 also expected to be big players. The tender is anticipated to be released in July or even pushed to August to ensure the highest value for the media rights.
While the BCCI was keen to get a deal done before the Asia Cup, there is no real urgency. India does not have a bilateral commitment at home until December, meaning they could stretch the process to suit their pockets. However, Rohit Sharma’s side will play Australia in a three-match ODI series before the World Cup 2023. Whether BCCI opts for an interim arrangement for the same, remains to be seen.
EY would suggest the best time for the BCCI to release the tender after interacting with potential broadcasters. It is still unclear if the Board will choose closed bidding or an electronic auction. India is slated to play 141 matches between 2024 and 2027 as part of the ICC FTP, including 38 Tests, 42 ODIs, and 61 T20 Internationals.
