Day 5 summary: Bangladesh and Sri Lanka drew the first Test in Chittagong on Thursday after Dinesh Chandimal and Niroshan Dickwella hung on for the visitors in a vital seventh-wicket stand. On the fifth and final day the two teams settled on a draw 45 minutes before the scheduled close of play with Sri Lanka on 260-6 in their second innings.

Dickwella was unbeaten on 61 alongside Chandimal on 39 not out at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. Hosts Bangladesh made 465 in their first innings in reply to Sri Lanka’s 397 as Tamim Iqbal (133) and Mushfiqur Rahim (105) played starring roles.

Angelo Mathews hit 199 to form the backbone of the Sri Lankan first innings and Nayeem Hasan claimed 6-105 for Bangladesh. On Thursday left-arm spin duo Taijul Islam and Shakib Al Hasan had given Bangladesh hope of victory with early strikes, before Chandimal and Dickwella thwarted the home side.

Sri Lanka skipper Dimuth Karunaratne made 52 off 138 balls before he gave a catch to his counterpart Mominul Haque at midwicket off Taijul. Shakib soon had Dhananjaya de Silva out for 33 off 60 balls as Mushfiqur Rahim took the catch, also at midwicket, leaving Sri
Lanka reeling at 161-6.

Dickwella swept the next ball high but Taijul could only manage to get a finger on it at square leg. After the scare, he and Chandimal then dug in at the crease before and after the tea break. Taijul struck twice in the morning session after Sri Lanka started aggressively, resuming on 39-2. Taijul bowled Kusal Mendis for 48 and then removed first-innings centurion Mathews for a duck, caught and bowled.

Taijul was the pick of the bowlers with innings figures of 4-82. Bangladesh was one bowler short on the fifth day after paceman Shoriful Islam was ruled out of the two-Test series following a blow he received on his hand while batting on Wednesday.

Day 4 summary: Liton and Rahim did not give away their wickets and batted the entire first session, with Rahim scoring a scintillating 105. He also became the first Bangladesh batsman to score 5000 Test runs. Sri Lanka however triggered a collapse post-lunch to eventually restrict the lead to 68, and Bangladesh were forced to declare after Shoriful’s injury. In their second innings, Sri Lanka lost Oshada Fernando to a mindless run-out, while night watchman Embuldeniya did not last long as Sri Lanka closed on 39/2 with captain Dimuth still at the crease.

Day 3 summary: Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudul Hasan scored a stunning 162-run stand for the opening wicket, before concussion substitute Kasun Rajitha wreaked a collapse with the hosts losing three quick wickets. Iqbal eventually went on to score his 10th Test hundred, before retiring out at 133 due to injury. Liton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim played out the rest of the day and reached their respective half-centuries to close play at a commanding 318/3.
Day 2 summary: Angelo Mathews missed out on his second double hundred by just one run. Sri Lanka were bowled out Sri Lanka for 397 runs. In reply Bangladesh ended the Day 2 at 76/0. Off-spinner Nayeem Hasan broke Mathews’s heart, forcing him to spoon a catch to Shakib Al Hasan at square leg on 199 as he made a desperate attempt to complete his double hundred with last man Vishwa Fernando at the other end. Mathews, who resumed on 114, earlier shared 136 runs with fellow overnight batsman Dinesh Chandimal (66) before hosts Bangladesh had their first success of the day.

Day 1 Summary: Former captain Angelo Mathews hit an unbeaten 114 to help Sri Lanka finish strongly on the opening day of the first Test against Bangladesh on Sunday. The tourists reached 258 for four at stumps after electing to bat first on what looked like a placid pitch in Chittagong at the start of the two-match series.

A minute of silence was observed before the match in memory of Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds, who died in a car crash on Saturday. The Bangladesh Cricket Board said it was “deeply saddened” at the passing of “one of Australia’s greatest allrounders in limited-overs cricket”. Neutral umpiring also returned for the first time since the onset of the pandemic, with England’s Richard Kettleborough officiating alongside Bangladesh’s Sharfuddoula.
