HS Prannoy vs Kalle Koljonen

Star Indian shuttler HS Prannoy progressed to the men’s singles second round of the World Championships with a straight-game win over Finland’s Kalle Koljonen here on Monday.

The world number 9 Indian, who reached the quarterfinals in the last two editions, saw off the left-handed Koljonen 24-22, 21-10 to extend his head-to-head count over the Finnish player to 3-0.

It was a tight battle in the opening game as Koljonen was quick to open up a 8-4 lead. But Prannoy reeled off seven straight points to grab a 11-8 lead at the break.

Lakshya Sen vs George Julien Paul

Lakshya Sen will begin his campaign by facing Mauritius’ George Julien Paul. The Indian is the 12th seed in the BWF World Championships and he will be the overwhelming favourite in the opening round.

Julien Paul meanwhile is ranked 111th in the world. He will be in action in the BWF Tour for the first time this season. The upcoming contest will be the second time both the players will be facing each other. They met at the Commonwealth Games last year and Lakshya Sen won the contest 21-12, 21-11.

Kidambi Srikanth vs Kenta Nishimoto

Kidambi Srikanth and Kenta Nishimoto will face each other in the first round at BWF World Championships. Srikanth has struggled in the season so far and hopes for a turnaround of fortunes.

Kenta Nishimoto meanwhile is the 14th seed in the tournament. The Japanese won the Madrid Masters earlier this year. He also reached the semifinal at the Canadian Open last month.

The upcoming contest will be the 10th time both the players will face each other. Srikanth leads the head-to-head record 6-3. They faced much recently at the Australian Open and Srikanth won the contest in straight games. The Indian hopes to replicate a similar performance in the upcoming contest.

India’s unseeded Mixed Doubles pair Rohan Kapoor and Sikki Reddy will also begin their campaign in the tournament on the day. Theywill face Scotland’s Adam Hall and Julie Macpherson in the first round.
