The 2009 junior Australian Open champion, Yuki Bhambri, defeated Joao Domingues of Portugal 6-4, 6-2. The 29-year-old Indian will next clash with world No. 143 Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic. However, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Ankita Raina were knocked out from the qualifiers in the opening round. Ramanathan lost 6-3, 7-5 to Italian Gian Marco Moroni.

While Ankita Raina fell 6-1, 6-0 to Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko, seeded sixth, in the women’s singles.

On Monday, Prajnesh Gunneswaran defeated third seed, Daniel Elahi Galan, from Colombia by 6-4, 6-4. He will face German Maximilian Marterer in the second round.

Meanwhile, Prajnesh Gunneswaran & Yuki Bhambri has progressed to Qualifier 2 in the Aus Open. Unfortunately, Ankita Raina received a bashing from Tsurenko in tough draw.

The highest-ranked Indian who has so far had no success in qualifying to the main round of a Grand Slam after 22 attempts will seek to end his drought in this fresh season.

Going into the Australian Open, Ramkumar has had good results. In November, he won his maiden singles Challenger title in Manama, Bahrain. Earlier in July he went down fighting in the final of Cary Challenger tournament against American Mitchell Krueger.

In the Grand Slams, his best performance came in the Wimbledon Qualifiers last year, where he went till the third round only to lose a five-setter to Australian Marc Polmans. He qualified until the second round in all the other Grand Slam Qualifiers in the previous year.
