The 19-year-old British sensation was hampered by a blistered racket hand from early in the first set of a tense contest on Margaret Court Arena but showed great fighting spirit to stay in contention.
With her usually powerful forehand reduced to a slice, Raducanu let slip a 3-0 lead to lose the first set.
But she played on her 98th-ranked opponent’s nerves to break at 4-4 in the second and take the match into a decider.
Kovinic showed great composure to forge ahead in the deciding set, resist a Raducanu fightback, and then move 5-3 ahead as the British youngster finally looked a little weary.
A stunning backhand winner sealed victory for the 27-year-old Kovinic as she moved into the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time.
She had earlier faced former US Open champion Sloane Stephens in the first round and won 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 to register her first victory in the season-opening Grand Slam.

Her opponent meanwhile is the 27-year old from Montenegro, who has never gone past the second round in any major . She is currently ranked World No. 98. However she had a good run in 2021 by reaching the final of the WTA 500 event in Charleston and followed it up with a semi-final finish at the WTA 250 event in the same venue. But in the build-up to the Australian Open this year, she has first-round exits in both Melbourne and Adelaide.
In the first round at the Australian Open, she played South Korean qualifier Jang Su Jeong and won 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Kovinic will face a tough challenge when she plays against Raducanu. Both these players will be facing each other for the first time in their career and Raducanu is expected to advance to the next round comfortably.
