Iga Swiatek Beat Jule Niemier

World number one Iga Swiatek survived a tough examination against Jule Niemeier on Monday to reach the second round of the Australian Open. The 2022 French and US Open champion was far from the fluent best that took her to a 37-match win streak last season, needing an hour and 59 minutes to see off the dogged German 6-4, 7-5 on Rod Laver Arena.

Swiatek is looking to add the third leg of a career Slam of all four majors in Melbourne but after edging a tight first set was broken at the start of the second by the powerful German world number 69. Niemeier was coming off the biggest season of her career in 2022 where she made the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and led Swiatek by a set and a break in the last 16 at the US Open.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Quentin Halys

Stefanos Tsitsipas is playing for a double prize this fortnight at the Australian Open. The Greek certainly started his campaign like a man on a mission on Monday at Melbourne Park, where he eased past Quentin Halys 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(6) to reach the second round.

Prior to the tournament, the Greek had spoken about his desire to carry the impressive form he showed at the United Cup. The 24-year-old did just that, delivering a highly aggressive and largely consistent performance. He held off a third-set resurgence from Halys — to seal victory in exactly two hours.

Daniil Medvedev beat Marcos Giron

Daniil Medvedev wasted little time in reaching the second round. He dismantled American Marcos Giron 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 to start his title quest in style. The World No. 8 is aiming to go one step further than his previous best-showing showings at the first major of the season this fortnight. Having lost in the final in 2021 and 2022, he is hungry to claim the title. Medvedev made the perfect start, hitting 28 winners en route to a one-hour, 36-minute win.

“I am really happy with the match,” Medvedev said. “Marcos is a tough opponent, so to beat him with this score in the first round at a Slam is great. I am really happy with my level and I am looking forward to the next round.”

Rafael Nadal BEAT Jack Draper

Defending champion Rafa Nadal dropped a set but prevailed in a battle of fitness against Jack Draper to reach the second round of the Australian Open on Monday with an unconvincing 7-5 2-6 6-4 6-1 over the injured Briton. Fellow lefthander Draper played superb tennis to level the match at a set all but the 21-year-old soon developed leg troubles and was left groaning in pain as Nadal closed out the match on a warm and sunny afternoon at Rod Laver Arena.

Jannik Sinner beat Kyle Edmund

Jannik Sinner made a stunning start at the 2023 Australian Open with a win against Kyle Edmund to open Monday’s play in Melbourne here at John Cain Arena. The 15th-seeded Italian ran away with a 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 win against Edmund. “I think I played very solid today. I had some difficult times to finish it off, but I think my level was very good today,” Sinner said in his post-match interview in John Cain Arena.

Jessica Pegula beat Jaqueline Cristian

Jessica Pegula began her bid for a first Grand Slam singles title by overwhelming Jaqueline Cristian 6-0, 6-1 in the first round of the Australian Open on Monday.

The third-seeded Pegula, a quarterfinalist in Melbourne in each of the past two years, needed just 59 minutes to beat the 161st-ranked Romanian player, who was appearing in her third Grand Slam event. “Today is just one of those days everything was working,” the American said. Pegula will play either Czech qualifier Brenda Fruhvirtova or Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the second round.

Emma Raducanu beat Tamara Korpatsch

Despite the great disparity between their Grand Slam successes, only one ranking spot separated 77th-ranked Raducanu from the higher-placed Korpatsch, ranked World No.76. Moreover, Raducanu suffered an ankle injury in her second-round match in Auckland less than two weeks ago.

But these issues proved to be of no concern for 20-year-old Raducanu as she eased past her 27-year-old opponent 6-3, 6-2 in 1 hour and 25 minutes.”I think that my forehand is a real weapon of mine,” Raducanu said to the press, after her win. “It’s going to take some fine-tuning, but going forward I really see myself loving that side and I really do.”
