Craig Tiley told the media that it’s a normalised environment since the pandemic has died down. He said, not dissimilar to cricket, there will potentially be players that will compete with COVID.

He further added, “We have gone a step further by making a recommendation around staying away when you’re ill, and that our medical staff will continue to monitor that, with the players individually as well.”

Tiley was speaking during an event at Melbourne Park on Monday ( January 9th) that marked the start of the Australian Open qualifying tournament. Cricketer Matt Renshaw continued to play for Australia in a five-day test match against South Africa in Sydney last week despite testing positive for COVID.

The Australian Open 2021 was postponed by three weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be the first time since the 2020 Australian Open that players are not required to test for Covid-19. The new health policy is a marked change from the strict protocols that were in place in the last two editions.  Novak Djokovic didn’t feature in AO 2021 due to his unvaccinated status. Nine times AO champion Djokovic will surely fancy his chance this time to lift the title.
