Since 2012, Australian Grand Prix has seen the pole-sitter win the race just once. It happened in the year 2015 when Lewis Hamilton qualified for pole position and even won the race. Since then, whoever has qualified for pole has not finished the race in the first position.

In 2012, Lewis Hamilton has qualified in the pole position followed by his then-teammate Jenson Button. But, it was Jenson Button who won the race and Lewis Hamilton finished in the third spot. Sebastian Vettel managed the second spot finish.

In 2013, Sebastian Vettel had qualified for the pole position followed by his then-teammate Mark Webber. But, it was Kimi Raikkonen in his not-so-fast Lotus who won the race starting from the seventh position. Fernando Alonso finished second followed by Sebastian Vettel.

In 2014, Lewis Hamilton again qualified for the pole position followed by the Aussie driver Daniel Ricciardo. But, it was Nico Rosberg who won that race followed by Kevin Magnussen in second and Jenson Button in third.

2015 was the only year when the driver who qualified for the pole position managed to win the race too. Lewis Hamilton had qualified for the pole position followed by his then-teammate Jenson Button. It was Lewis Hamilton who won the race with Nico Rosberg in second and Sebastian Vettel in the third position.

In 2016, It was again Lewis Hamilton who qualified for the pole position followed by Nico Rosberg. But, this time Nico got the better of his teammate Lewis and won the race. Lewis had finished in the second spot followed by Sebastian Vettel in third.

In 2017, Lewis Hamilton once again qualified for the pole position followed by Sebastian Vettel. But, it was Sebastian Vettel who had won the race followed by Hamilton in second and Bottas in third.

In 2018, Lewis Hamilton again qualified for the pole position followed by Kimi Raikkonen. But, it was again Sebastian Vettel who won the race followed by Hamilton in second and Raikkonen in third.

In 2019, Lewis Hamilton again qualified for the pole position followed by Valtteri Bottas. But, Valtteri got the better of Lewis and won the race. Hamilton finished second followed by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

The year 2020 and 2021 didn’t see a race in Australia due to Covid-19 restrictions and logistical issues. But, after a gap of two years, the Australian Grand Prix is back and starts on 8th April with the race scheduled for 10th April.
