Australia vs Afghanistan ODI: Cricket Australia on Thursday decided to call off the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan scheduled to be played in March in UAE. The decision was taken by the board to show support for women in Afghanistan after consulting Australian government. Following extensive consultation with relevant stakeholders, including the Australian Government, Cricket Australia has decided that it is unable to proceed at this time with the upcoming ICC Super League three-match Men’s ODI series between Australia and Afghanistan scheduled for the UAE in March 2023. Cricket Australia released a statement on Twitter.

“Cricket Australia is committed to supporting growing the game for women and men around the world, including in Afghanistan, and will continue to engage with the Afghanistan Cricket Board in anticipation of improved conditions for women and girls in the country. We thank the Australian Government for its support on this matter”.

Following Taliban’s latest announcement of banning education for women ICC CEO Geoff Allardice has expressed his concern. He even confirmed the issue would be raised at the next ICC meeting.

Allardice said,  “Our board has been monitoring progress since the change of regime. It is a concern that progress is not being made in Afghanistan and it’s something our board will consider at its next meeting in March. As far as we are aware, there isn’t activity at the moment.”

ICC ODI Super League points: Will forfeiting Afghanistan series effect Australia?

The Australia vs Afghanistan series had ODI super League points on offer. With  Australia deciding against travelling to UAE and forfeiting the series the 30 points on offer will be awarded to Afghanistan.

However Australia will not be effected too much Since they achieved automatic qualification to the ODI World Cup in India. They are currently one of the top eight ranked nations in the Super League.

Despite the cancellation of Afghanistan series, the Aussies are scheduled to  play ODIs series in India. The matches will take place between March 17-22. Post India series, Australia will have five matches series in South Africa in August and September. Preceding the World Cup they are scheduled to have three more matches in India. However none of these will impact their World Cup qualification.
